Steelbacks win in vain

Both teams found it tough going with the bat at the Clontarf Cricket Club Ground in Dublin, Northants labouring to 205 after being put into bat.

Niall O'Brien managed to make just five against his compatriots before being caught behind off the bowling of his younger brother, Kevin.

South African all-rounder Andrew Hall top-scored with 72 from 101 balls, his innings containing nine fours and a six.

He shared a crucial stand of 53 with Rikki Wessels (36) that rescued the English county from the precarious position of 55-4.

Collapse

Ireland's reply started well enough with an opening stand of 30 inside seven overs but once the first wicket fell they collapsed in a heap.
